Considering Surgery For TMJ Disorder? Think Again!
Maybe you are thinking long and hard about if you should have surgery for TMJ disorder. It’s not an easy decision and we can certainly understand why you might be thinking of visiting your doctor for advice. The pain and constant irritation that TMJ causes is pretty unbearable. We totally understand. Yet, before you visit your doctor again to decide if you should let him or her conduct an invasive procedure, let’s examine why you may want to consider the alternatives.
The Doctor Isn’t Always Right
For many of us, having trust in our doctor goes way back to when we were children. We were told by our parents that our doctor knows best and is here to help us. While we certainly won’t argue the point that most doctors have our best interests in mind, the simple fact is that most aren’t 100% sure of what causes TMJ disorder. These doctors then suggest surgery because they think it’s the best way to relieve you of your pain. Sadly, there are two major flaws with this approach: The first major issue is the risk involved with invasive surgery. Your doc will be slicing through muscles, flesh, and delicate tendons. You will be incredibly susceptible to a weaker TMJ joint post-surgery.
The second thing you must take into account are the harmful and expensive medications your doctor will prescribe once the surgery is over. These meds could cause side effects with long-term ramifications. It would probably make more sense for your doctor to steer you down the path of natural remedies versus surgery for TMJ pain. Many don’t, however, because of the massive kickback from pharmaceutical companies.
Cuts You Up
Why don’t we take a look at the top 5 reasons you may want to consider some home remedies instead of surgery for TMJ disorder. Drumroll please: Allowing your doctor to perform an invasive surgery doesn’t really get to the root cause of the problem. It’s just a quick fix for a problem that demands a long-term solution. This will ensure you don’t need additional surgeries down the road. You could run the risk of infection. You could suffer from additional complications due to the anesthesia. TMJ surgery is a big, big deal. Just like the quote says: It’s only minor or painless [surgery] when it happens to someone else. Studies on patients post-surgery have shown that repositioning of the discs can cause increased damage to the area. You very well could be in the same amount of pain after the procedure is complete. TMJ surgery produces results that are unpredictable. We’re not talking about something as routine as having your wisdom teeth removed.
Having surgery for TMJ pain isn’t something you should jump right into. You may want to read up on and practice a few TMJ home remedies as a natural option versus invasive procedures.
