How Cat Training Can Fix Your Cat’s Behavior Problems
Many people believe that it’s only dogs that need to be trained. This is just a myth. Cats behavior improves greatly and your relationship strengthens with you and your cat once you have employed a little cat training. Plus, cat training sessions give your cat something to focus their energy on. Many cats become destructive if they naturally have a lot of energy and they do not burn it off.
Don’t be alarmed. Many people have heard that training a cat is difficult because cats are stubborn and independent. It certainly can be if you use the wrong methods. However training a cat using the right methods is simple especially once you have a general understanding of how a cat learns. You need to keep in mind that a cat learns through experiences sort of like a small child. Your cat learns to avoid they will avoid doing things that are unpleasant. They will spend more time doing things that bring them attention, praise, pleasure and of course treats!
You have to keep this in mind when training your cat because many times cat owners make a fatal mistake with their cats. This mistake is rewarding bad behavior. You may not even realize that your are doing it. That goes back to why it is important to understand why your cat is doing something. For example, you may want to break your cat’s bad habit of excessive meowing, but whenever he starts doing it you pick him up or give him food or do something to make him be quiet. What you are doing is exactly why he meows in the first place - he wants attention and he is getting. So, as you can see he is not going to stop meowing if it is getting him what he wants.
Cat owners are frustrated and confused when their cat training practices are not successful. Well, if you are trying to train them like a dog it won’t work. Using punishment to train your cat like using a spray bottle to spray your cat when they are doing something wrong doesn’t make them afraid of behaving badly it just makes them avoid you since you are the one spraying them. If you’re are the one making the environment unpleasant they associate the punishment with you.
What is the right way to train your cat? One of the most common cat behavior problems to is their cat is not using the litter box. To fix this you needs to get rid of any unpleasantness that might be around the litter box. Since cats value their privacy the first thing to do is put their litter box in a quiet and private place. Also, to let them have their own litter box that no other cats or dogs use. Since cats are clean animals they also refuse to use a dirty litter box. Their litter box needs to be kept clean in order for them to use it.
Another common issue is scratching. In order to feed your cat’s natural need to scratch you need to provide him with a scratching post and encourage him to use it. In the meantime, cover the areas that the cat seems to prefer to scratch on. Eventually the cat should take to the scratching post and ignore his old scratching spot.
After knowing this you and your cats relationship is easy to save. Remember to avoid punishing your poor cat. It doesn’t do you any good and only makes them afraid of you. Then remember that they love attention. There’s a rumor that cat’s don’t like attention. This is wrong! Cat’s are naturally independent but still have feeling and love to be loved. Your cat will do anything for you to give them a little love. Just don’t give it to them when they are doing something bad. *Important: Your cat may be misbehaving because they don’t feel well and this is the only way they know to get your attention. Take them to the vet to rule out any medical conditions before implementing any form of training.
Take a little time to understand your cat. It will strengthen your relationship with them and keep their behavior under control.
