The Secret to Writing a Perfect Best Man Speech
If you’re the best man at your friend’s wedding, then chances are you know the groom very well. You’re also aware by now that you’ll be expected to make a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. If you need help preparing this speech, here are a few tips to bear in mind.
*Be prepared! Don’t make it up on the fly. Even the most quick-witted and glib of people (like you, of course!) can go numb when they’re put on the spot. Take a lesson from the famous Mark Twain: “It usually takes me more than three weeks to plan a good impromptu speech.”
At least jot down a few points or key phrases if you don’t want to write it out word-for-word ahead of time.
*It’s okay to be funny, but be serious. Sure it sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s still important. Without a little humor, you risk boring the guests.
However, it’s imperative to remember that your best man speech is a tribute to a couple’s new life together. You can be sure that the two of them take their marriage very seriously, and they want to know that you honor that. Sarcasm might be funny and enjoyable in the right circumstances, but please remember that it is NEVER appropriate in a wedding speech.
*Be concise. Please don’t ramble on. If you can, try to practice in front of at least one other person. Watch their eyes. If the eyes start glazing over, it’s time to find something to cut out from your speech.
*Careful with the anecdotes. Steer clear of stories about your friend’s old girlfriends, and don’t go telling the guests about embarrassing moments that could make your friend’s new wife want to clobber you. If your buddy’s wife doesn’t like you, don’t expect to see much of your friend after the wedding is over.
*Talk about something you like or admire about the bride– if it’s appropriate! Don’t forget, you want to be endearing yourself to her.
*Above all, be sincere. You were chosen as best man for a reason. Keep that in mind and share in the joy of your friend’s happiness. Then, your best man speech will be remembered fondly.
